Home Economics - Anzac Biscuits

Anzac Biscuits

Today in Home Economics we got split into multiple groups, each group got given different recipes to bake. My group consisted of Emily, Dominique, Brayden, and I. Our group made an iconic Anzac Biscuit.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup standard plain flour
1/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup coconut 
3/4 rolled oats
1 tbsp golden syrup
50g butter
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 tbsp boiling water

Method:

Mix together the flour, sugar, coconut, and rolled oats. Cut the butter into cubes and melt the butter and golden syrup together in a small bowl. Dissolve the baking soda in the hot water and add it to the butter and golden syrup. Fold the butter mixture into the dry mixture until combined. Roll the mix into medium-sized balls and then fit them into a lined tray. Place them into the oven for about 12-15 minutes or until golden. 

Sensory Evaluation:

They had a nice crunch on the outside while the inside was soft and chewy. The outside had this sugary coating while the inside had this chewy mix between a sweet coconut.

My Personal Opinion on how the group worked:

I personally think our group worked well together but, I do think one of us could have contributed more and communicated with us other than arguing with us and thinking they could do anything they wanted to do. We had assigned jobs for everyone and they still thought he could go on his own path.

Would I modify anything?

I personally wouldn't modify or change anything about the recipe, I thought the recipe was very easy to make and most people would have everything at home.

From my Stakeholder - My Sister:

She said that she enjoyed the flavour, you could taste the golden syrup and sugar, it wasn't too sweet and it had enough golden syrup. She liked the soft and chewy inside and the crunch added. She said the coconut was a nice thing to add.

❝ Donuts | Quarantine ₊˚. 🍩

During quarantine, I baked Donuts with my two siblings! One of our tasks for Home Economics during the lockdown was to bake at least one food an blog about it! We made Krispy Kreme Orginal Glazed inspired donuts. 

Ingredients:

For Donuts:
1 1/4 cups whole milk 
2 1/4 teaspoon instant (quick-rise) yeast 
2 large eggs
8 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted an cooled)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
4 1/4 cups bread flour
Oil (for frying)

For Glaze:
4 cups powdered sugar 
1/2 cup milk
1 pinch salt

Donut:
  1. In a medium bowl, heat the milk in the microwave until it is warm to the touch, about 45 seconds. Add in the yeast and give it gentle stir. Let the mixture sit until there is some foam on top, about 5 minutes.
  2. Using a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook, beat together the yeast mixture, the eggs, butter, sugar and salt until combined. Add in about half of the flour and mix until combined. Add in the remaining flour and mix until combined. During the mixing process, you may need to stop the mixer and scrape down the sides. If the dough is too wet to handle, add in flour 1 tablespoon at a time. Cover the bowl with a large kitchen towel, and leave it in a warm place to let it rise until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
  3. When the dough is done rising, pour it onto a well-floured surface and roll it to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut the donuts with a donut cutter, or with 2 different sized round cookie cutters (the large cutter should be about 3-inches in diameter). Save the donut holes. Knead scraps together, being careful not to overwork the dough, and repeat the process of rolling it out and cutting the donuts.
  4. Place the cut donuts on parchment paper, leaving room to rise between each one. (TIP: I place each donut on an individual piece of parchment paper, so it is easy to transfer into the hot oil for frying. See picture.) Cover the donuts with a kitchen towel and let them rise in a warm place until they are puffed up, about 45 minutes.
  5. About 15 minutes before the donuts are done rising, heat oil in a deep-fryer or large heavy-bottomed pot to 375°F/190°C. Place cooling racks on top of sheets of paper towels parchment paper, or line plates with paper towels.
  6. When the donuts are ready and the oil is hot, carefully add the donuts to the oil, a few at a time without overcrowding your deep-fryer or pot. (TIP: I find that it is easier to place the entire parchment paper in the oil with the donuts, so I don't accidentally "stretch" out the donuts. Once the donuts are in the oil, you can easily remove the parchment paper with tongs.) When the bottom of the donuts are golden, about 45 seconds, flip the donuts over using a spatula. Cook until the other side is also golden. Donut holes will cook quicker. Remove donuts with a tong or slotted spatula, and place on the prepared racks or plates. Repeat with the remaining donuts, making sure to keep the oil at the right temperature.
Glaze:
In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, milk and salt until smooth. If you prefer a thinner glaze on the donuts, add in more milk one teaspoon at a time.

Conclusion:
Overall, the donuts were delicious! The inside of the donut was nice and moist the outside was crispy. The glaze was just a little bit too sweet for me but other then that they were yum!

❝ Cupcakes | Home Economics ₊˚. 🧁

In Home Economics, we baked cupcakes. It was split into 2 sessions. Tuesday: making the cupcake | Friday: decorating the cupcake. 

There was a challenge where we had to try tricking the brain by not matching the icing color to its flavor. (For example. Blue Icing with Strawberry flavoring)

This blog post should've been posted weeks ago, so I would like to apologize to my teachers for such a late post!

Ingredients:

125 g Margarine / Butter
3/4 c of Sugar
1 t of Vanilla Essence
2 Eggs ( size 7 )
1 1/2 c of Plain Flour
2 t of Baking Powder
1/2 c of Milk

Method:

Turn the Oven on 180 c on Bake.
- Cream the Butter in a large glass bowl using a wooden spoon.
- Add the Sugar and continue creaming it until the texture turns light and fluffy.
- Add Vanilla Essence and beat briefly.
- Add Eggs one at a time. Make sure to beat it well after you add each Eggs.
- Sift Flour and Baking Powder onto a large plate.
- Using a Rubber scraper, scrape all of the butter mixture off of the wooden spoon.
- Add at least two table spoon of the Flour and Baking Powder and Milk into the Butter mixture, then start folding them in with the Rubber scraper.
- Just keep on adding the Milk and Flour mixture into the Butter mixture until there's no more left. Do no Over mix.
- Gently scoop some of the cake batter into 12 paper cases. Make sure to do this evenly. ( The paper cases should be in the cupcake pan )
- Put in the Oven and let it cook for seven minutes. Then once it's done cooking, put it on Fan Bake and then cook for 6-8 more minutes.

Savoury Bread Cases

Today, in Home Economics we made Savoury Bread Cases.


Ingredients:


  • White Bread
  • Wholemeal Bread
  • Cheese
  • Ham
  • Butter
  • Spaghetti
  • Baked Beans
  • Corn

Equipment:

  • Muffin Tin
  • Butter Knives 
  • Bread Knives
  • Cutting Board

Method:

  • Cut the crust off the bread.
  • Butter the bread.
  • Place the buttered side of the bread into the muffin tin.
  • Press down gently and try not to push a hole into the bread.
  • Put in the oven for 5 minutes.
  • Place your fillings into the cases.
  • Bake until slightly crispy
  • Take out and enjoy!
