❝ The Water Cycle₊˚.💧

❝ The Water Cycle₊˚.💧

This week for Climate Chaos we had to cut out 10 hexagons and explain how each of them went together.

  • Water Cycle + Transpiration
Transpiration is a step of the water cycle.

  • Transpiration + Water Vapour
They are all the action of water vapour going up.

  • Water Vapour + Precipitation
Water vapour goes up into the clouds and it falls ( precipitation ) in sleet, snow, rain, hail etc

  • Precipitation + Acid Rain
Carbon Dioxide can cause Acid Rain when it goes up in the cloud

  • Acid Rain + Carbon Dioxide
Causes Acid Rain when it goes up into the clouds.
  • Water Vapour + Evaporation
They are from water (Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, Ponds) and the watering plants.

  • Water Vapour + Condensation
When the water vapour rises it forms together to make clouds which is also part of the water cycle.

  • Evaporation + Condensation
Because (evaporation) the water evaporates and rises and it clumps together to make clouds (condensation).

  • Hurricanes + Condensation
Hurricanes can change the climate and the surface of the Earth which can lead to disrupting weather patterns.

  • Water Vapour + Precipitation
Water vapour goes up into the clouds

❝ Water Cycle Experiments₊˚.💦

Title: Water Cycle Experiments

Aim: To learn about water on earth

Scientific Words: Evaporation: When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapor.
Transpiration: Evaporation from plants.
Condensation: When water vapor cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
Precipitation: When clouds get heavy the water falls as rain, sleet, hail or snow.
Acidification: The action or process of making or becoming acidic.

Purpose: The purpose is to duplicate the water cycle process in a controlled.

Materials:
  • Water - 100ml
  • Blue Food Coloring
  • A4 Zip Lock Bag x2
  • Vivid
  • Litmus
  • Baking Soda - 1 Teaspoon
  • Double-sided tape
Procedures:
  1. Gather your materials.
  2. Using your vivid draw a picture of the water cycle on the bag.
  3. Add the labels of what the parts of the water cycle.
  4. Add 50m of water to the bag.
  5. Add 2 drops of blue food colouring.
  6. Zip up the bag.
  7. Tape the bag to a window using double-sided tape.
  8. Get your other bag.
  9. Repeat the drawing steps on bag two.
  10. Add 50m of soda water.
  11. Add one teaspoon of baking soda.
  12. Zip up the bag but leaving a small gap.
  13. Put one strip of litmus paper in leaving it half in the bag and half out.
  14. Make sure the zip lock is closed and securing the paper.
  15. Tape the bag to the window next to bag one using double sided tape.
  16. Wait for a few days-weeks.
  17. Watch as the condensation builds up.
Conclusion:

If you follow these steps you will be able to do the experiment successfully and replicate the water
cycle process in controlled conditions.

Hurumanu - Wind Power

Measuring weather.

Definitions:

Anemometer:
An instrument for measuring the speed of the wind, or of any current of gas.
Beaufort wind scale: The Beaufort scale is an empirical measure that relates wind speed to observed conditions at sea or on land.

Anemometer

MATERIALS

  1.  2 Skewers
  2.  4 Plastic Lids
  3.  1 Pin
  4.   Tape
  5.   1 Vivid

STEPs

  1. Tape the plastic lids to each side of the skewers.
  2. Tape the skewers together.
  3. Then, place the skewers onto the pencil eraser.
  4. Stick the pin through the tape and eraser.
Groups size: 5
Roles:
  • Timekeeper
  • Counter
  • Recorder
  • Anemometer Manager
  • Wind Manager
Instructions:
  • Go to the measuring place and set up your wind gauge.
  • Make sure everyone in your group is ready to start their roles.
  • Record how many times it spins and record it in the table below.
  • Count the number of spins in 15 seconds.
  • Record it on your chart.
  1. Mount the anemometer in a place that has full access to the wind from all directions.
  2. When the time keeper says "Go", the counter in each group will count how many times the marked cup passes them in one minute and write it down.
  3. Repeat the above step four (4) times and record the number of spins on the chart.

FINDINGS

2.Old J Block Site.0
3.Grass hill in the quad0
4.Tennis Court Gate.0

CONCLUSION:

When we were near the Tennis Court Gate there wasn't much wind because the trees were blocking the wind from spinning the anemometer.

There wasn't much wind in J Block either because there was a lot of construction in the way.

There was wind at the field, but the anemometer didn't spin because our group concluded that there was too much tape.

When we were at the Grass Hill our group kept surrounding the anemometer and it didn't get a chance to spin.

My Holiday

On the first week of the school holidays, I went to the beach with my sister, Haven and dad. My dad wanted to go out since Haven and I were stuck home while our parents went to work. At first I didn't want to go because I wanted to stay home and play with my cat. Haven convinced me to go, I got up and put my cat in the lounge. The more I thought about it, the more I got excited. It has been a long time since I've been to the beach. I was glad we were finally going out, staying home sounds relaxing but when you stay home all day, you get sick of it.

My dad came up to me and said that we weren't going to swim but we can dip our feet in. I was kind of sad that we couldn't swim, but I was still excited. My dad told me to get two towels, even though we weren't swimming we needed something to sit on. After getting everything ready, my dad called my mum to tell her we were going to the beach just in case we came home late. It took a couple of times to call her because she was busy at work but we finally got a hold of her.

I raced Haven to the car, Haven kept laughing I didn't know what she was laughing about. We were finally on the road, Haven was telling me what we could do, she is only seven so she had a whole lot of good ideas. My dad suggested we would get some food for the beach, Haven suggested Burger King. I wasn't hungry, so I said I would just get a drink. My dad said he'd get me food just in case I got hungry while we were there. After our stop at Burger King, we started our adventure to the beach again, the drive was very long and I was really tired so I had a quick nap.

30 Minutes Later, we had finally made it. I got a longer sleep then I thought, I looked over to my side to see Haven deep in her sleep. My dad told me to wake up, trust me I was scared, when you wake her up she's very moody and she'll get very mad at you. I woke her up and surprisingly she was in a good mood, maybe she couldn't stop thinking about the beach. I was grabbing the bag that had the towels and food, suddenly Haven touched my arm and said "Tag, you're it!" I closed the boot and ran past my dad trying to catch up with Haven, she had a big smile on her face, while she was running she nearly fell over, but luckily I was just in time to catch her.

We had finally made it to the beach, Haven asked me "Do you smell that?" I was confused on what she was smelling, there was lots of smells, I asked her "What smell?" She started laughing at me "The smell of the sea, idiot." I looked at her hitting my chest dramatically pretending to be hurt by her calling me a idiot. My dad, who was far a head told us to hurry up, so we ran as fast as we could to him.

I put down the towels so we could sit on them. Haven and I weren't hungry so we went straight to the water, we found lots of shells. We decided to see who could jump over more waves then the other, the game went on for a long time, both of us were committed to winning. Haven started getting tired and said she was finished. I had won the game! My dad came down and told us to go, it was time to go already? We didn't know we had been playing that one game for ages. My dad brought down our shoes and one towel so we didn't have to get sand stuck onto our feet.

We were heading back home, I was more tired from before, it was most likely because we were jumping a lot. Haven was completely knocked out, I decided to get some sleep as well, because when I'm tired it doesn't go too well. I got home and had a shower, even though we only dipped our feet in I still wanted to have a shower. After I was finished with everything, my dad told me we had to go get the pizza he ordered, I didn't know he got pizza. I asked if I could stay home and play with my cat, he said yes.

While I was playing with my cat, I heard some strange noises. I decided to put my cat on the chair and try and find out where the sound was coming from, I turn a corner and "BOO!" Did you expect me to get scared? Well, I didn't. I stood there with a blank face looking at my dad and Haven. "We'll get her next time" said my dad.

The New Kahui's.

The New Kahui's

This week, the year 7 & 8's moved into the new Kahui's. The classes together are, TS with SH, DS with AL & MT and TZ & BH. All three buildings had different names, Mohua, Riroriro and Tieke. TS & SH are Tieke. All of the buildings are named after native birds. It took two years including the Learning Commons and Learning Street for it all to be built. I wasn't here on Monday or Tuesday so I didn't get to explore much of the classroom.

--------------------------------------

When I walked into our new buildings I saw, bright orange walls, different bright colored tables, dark blue chairs, bright orange bookshelf to match the wall, white and grey walls complementing the orange. There was a large seating that looked like stairs, at the back of the seating was tables and plugs for students. There was also cubes on the sides of the seating with a table just big enough for two students. There was a large tall black table, it looked like it could only be comfortable for the tall people. There was a door leading out into the field, there was lots of classrooms in one building.

When I walked into our new buildings I thought, that it looked much bigger and had much more space then our other classrooms. I thought it was going to be smaller, but it looked much bigger to what I had imagined. I thought I was going to get lost in these new buildings because of how similar all buildings looked. I thought that the outside area was amazing, the seating with umbrellas covering the seats to block the sun, the hill of fake grass looked nice.

When I walked into our new buildings I felt, scared, anxious and excited. I felt scared and anxious because it was new buildings and I didn't know which one to go into. I had to ask a couple of friends to know which building I was in. At the same time I felt a sense of excitement, it was a new building and new area, feeling excited is a good feeling. There was also a new timetable that I had to get used to for next term.

Ella West

Ella West Visit

Image result for ella west

Today we had a special visit from Ella West.

Ella West is a New Zealand author who is widely known for her book Night Vision.

Ella came in today to talk about her two books Night Vision & Rain Fall

Ella started writing her book ( Night Vision ) in 2011. Night Vision is about a girl with Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP). At night she would go to her parent's farm that had a forest. She had Night Vision Goggles with her so she could see better in the dark. While she was exploring the forest, she witnesses something that could get her into a lot of trouble. Night Vision is based in Ashburton, it was originally going to be based in Christchurch.

Rain Fall is about a girls father that is a train driver that takes the coal from the mines. Her father and thousands of people are at risk of losing their jobs.

Ella says that her goal every day is to write at least 1000 words. Her books have at least 50,000 words. 50,000 is her go-to goal. It takes her up to 1 year to write one book

Tane Mahuta

Tane Mahuta
Week 5
190821

This week for Tane Mahuta, we went back into our three groups. The first group went with Mark to prune trees, the second group helped Mrs.Alan with the outside classroom. Lastly, the third group went with Mr.Tisch to help with the veggie beds.

On one side, Makenzie and I raked the dirt while the others on the other side loosened the dirt with the shovels. Once Makenzie and I finished raking one side the others went ahead and started planting some vegetables. Makenzie and I continued to rake the other side.

After interval, we made a tunnel on top of the veggie beds.

When we were finished with the tunnel, we helped Mrs.Alan with the outside classroom. We put different objects into assigned spots. If any of the parts had metal or wood on it they would break it off.

PE Hurumanu - Small Team Reflection

This week in our P.E Hurumanu we played Cross-Court Games in the new gym, our focus was to work in teams with people you’ve never worked with.

Our activity was Cross-Court Games, For this activity, I rated my self as a level 3.
To achieve level 3 we have to show that we can consistently make a contribution to the team goal.
During the game of Cross-Court Games showed that I am working at level 3 by including myself in the team activity and I include others. These examples show that I have met the standard for level 3.
While playing the Cross-court games, something that I found challenging was communicating with the other team. The reason I found this challenging was because they wouldn’t share the ball and kept taking their time to make a goal.
However, I managed to overcome this challenge by both teams talking it out with a teacher and playing the game fairly.

Next week I am aiming to work at level 4 To make sure that I am working that level I am going to work on always encouraging others and using positive words and actions to lift my team’s performance.
