Heating Zinc Oxide

 Heating Zinc Oxide

Aim: What change happens when we heat Zinc Oxide?

Equipment:

  1. Bunsen Burner
  2. Heat Mat
  3. Tripod
  4. Safety Glasses
  5. Crucible (Small Ceramic Bowl)
  6. Crucible Holder
  7. Zinc Oxide
Results:
As it was heating up the colour of the Zinc Oxide turned into a Neon Yellow and then when the powder cooled down it turned into its original colour, White.

Discussion:
When you heat up the Zinc Oxide it loses some of its Oxygen. During this process, Electrons change levels which causes it to change colours.
