Anzac Biscuits

Today in Home Economics we got split into multiple groups, each group got given different recipes to bake. My group consisted of Emily, Dominique, Brayden, and I. Our group made an iconic Anzac Biscuit.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup standard plain flour

1/3 cup sugar

2/3 cup coconut 

3/4 rolled oats

1 tbsp golden syrup

50g butter

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

2 tbsp boiling water

Method:

Mix together the flour, sugar, coconut, and rolled oats. Cut the butter into cubes and melt the butter and golden syrup together in a small bowl. Dissolve the baking soda in the hot water and add it to the butter and golden syrup. Fold the butter mixture into the dry mixture until combined. Roll the mix into medium-sized balls and then fit them into a lined tray. Place them into the oven for about 12-15 minutes or until golden. 

Sensory Evaluation:

They had a nice crunch on the outside while the inside was soft and chewy. The outside had this sugary coating while the inside had this chewy mix between a sweet coconut.

My Personal Opinion on how the group worked:

I personally think our group worked well together but, I do think one of us could have contributed more and communicated with us other than arguing with us and thinking they could do anything they wanted to do. We had assigned jobs for everyone and they still thought he could go on his own path.

Would I modify anything?

I personally wouldn't modify or change anything about the recipe, I thought the recipe was very easy to make and most people would have everything at home.

From my Stakeholder - My Sister:

She said that she enjoyed the flavour, you could taste the golden syrup and sugar, it wasn't too sweet and it had enough golden syrup. She liked the soft and chewy inside and the crunch added. She said the coconut was a nice thing to add.

★ High angle: makes the character "Other Wybie" look small. weak and vulnerable. 

★ POV: Other Mother - dominant & powerful.

★ Medium shot: gives us some ideas of background but not full.

★ Audience: feels - powerful, we are looking down on Wybie through "Other Mothers" POV

- sad/worried for Wybie - he looks small, sad, innocent

- first character in the world to suggest something is not right

★ Directors Purpose: 

- makes us feel sorry for Wybie 

- makes audience think that maybe the "Other Mother" isn't so nice - foreshadowing 

In the shot with the other Wybie and the Other mother, high angle shots are used effectively to show the theme 

"Looks can be deceiving" This is demonstrated through a high angle shot from the point of view of the other mother. She is looking down the front porch steps at a scared other Wybie. This makes the audience feel sorry for Wybie and makes the Other Mother seem powerful. The purpose of this scene was to make the audience think that maybe the Other Mother isn't so nice after all. Combined with the use of lighting, Wybie is in a warm light but surrounded by darkness, the director has created an atmosphere of caution - somethings not right. This reminds the viewer of a later scene where Coraline is looking up at the Other Mother in horror as she throws her through a magical portal into a locked room. This shows that looks can be deceiving because the Other Mother wasn't nice as we thought like Coraline first thought

Coraline: Workshop 1 Unpacking Themes and Ideas

Theme/Ideas ➜ something that links throughout the story

Looks can be deceiving ➜ things that aren't always what they seem.

Example 1: The Beldam/The Other Mother

- She starts of kind/nice but is revealed to be an evil soul devouring metal spider demon.

- Shows theme because the other mother changes gradually over time so Coraline and the audience don't notice. 

- Important to the story because it helps the audience understand Coralines choice when she realises that having everything won't make her happy.

Example 2: Other World vs Real World

- The other world is a perfect web/trap to catch Coraline, whereas the real world is boring but safe.

- Shows theme because even though the other world seems better in every way, the real world is actually better/safe because it isn't a trap.

- Important to help audience understand why Coraline goes back to the real world.

Statement ➜ In Coraline, themes and ideas are used effectively.

Evidence ➜ For instance, the theme "looks can be deceiving" is shown through the character of the "Other Mother" The "Other Mother" starts kind, but is revealed to be a soul devouring demon.

eXplanation (audience) ➜ This makes the audience feel that we shouldn't trust things or people that seem perfect at first glance.

eXplanation (director) ➜ this was done to make the audience feel weary or develop a sense of caution towards new situations. 

eXplanation (compare)➜ Coinciding with this is the use of colour to show the "Other Mother" is becoming more evil, at the start she is surronded by warm colours that make us feel safe, but by the end it is dark with neon green which make her seem dangerous.

Chewy Chocolate Chips - Home Economics

Last Friday, in cooking class we made some delicious chewy chocolate chip cookies. The texture in the inside is soft and chewy but on the outside it is crunchy. if you leave them out for maybe more then 30 minutes it will become more crunchy but still soft in the inside, if you prefer them softer then I would recommend you to eat them after cooling so they are nice and warm.

INGREDIENTS

100g butter softened,
1/2 cup of white sugar,
1/2 cup of brown sugar,
1 egg,
1 tsp vanilla,
1 1/2 cups flour,
pinch of salt,
1/2 tsp of baking powder,
1/2 cup choco chips

DIRECTIONS - MADE SIMPLE

We started off by turning our oven to 180 on bake. We then got our mise en place done (Finished getting our ingredients and putting them in order). After that, we softened our butter and added the sugars as well as the vanilla. Once that was creamed together, we added our egg and whipped it until it was incorporated into the mixture. When the wet ingredients were together we mixed all of our dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder, and chocolate chips) into a separate bowl to make sure everything would be incorporated at the same time. After that, we mixed the dry ingredients into the wet mixture making sure nit to River mix because that would activate the gluten. When we mixed it we got a tray and lined it with baking paper so the cookies don't stick to the tray. We rolled the cookies into medium-sized balls and placed them down so they don't touch when they spread out while cooking. Then you put them into the oven on the top shelf and cook for about 8 - 10 minutes.

• Other Parents: fun, give Coraline attention, energetic, cooked her a nice meal, they look happy and healthy unlike the real parents.
• Music: spooky music, slow pace, sad, gentle, doesn't match what we're seeing, minor, quiet.

The real neighbors:

• Colour - greys, dark, mournful, sad colours - palette, foggy, washed out,

• Lighting - dark/gloomy - inside house, cold light,

• Music - bland, background, medium pace,

The Beldam:

• Music - slower, quiet, menacing, creepy, deep, eerie atmosphere, scary, other world, suspicious
• Setting - chocolate & furniture were beetles, transforms from to the perfect home to a spider web - polluted

1. Wybie gave Coraline a mini doll that looks like herself.
2. Coralines parents were too busy with their work that they didn't give much attention to her.
3. The house she lives in is 150 years old.
4. Her parents didn't believe her stories about her "other life" behind the door, her mum got worried so she locked the door and hid they key for her safety.
5. The other mother made dolls to spy on that persons life to see what they didn't enjoy so that she could make the other life more enjoyable.

What I found interesting is when Beldam made the look-a-like doll to spy on the persons life. I found it very interesting but also very clever.
